Just put h.Energy week in your diary (15th - 23rd October 2011), and look out for the brochures we will be producing during September... and then come along and join in!
Or, if you would like to be more actively involved, read through the list of ideas below, and think about whether you or your friends / community group / school / parish / business / workplace would like to organise an event or activity for h.Energy week.
ECO Show and Tell - if your home or workplace is designed /insulated to a low or zero carbon standard, or if you have invested in energy generation which might be of interest to local people, why not consider opening to the public during this week - offer guided tours or a discussion evening about the work you have done.
This year h.Energy coincides with Herefordshire's Food Festival, so we would like to highlight the benefits and enjoyment of producing, cooking and eating local food.
... Why not host a community meal in your local village hall using local produce, or aim to eat food which is produced locally for the week, or plan an event on your local allotments, or support your local shop to stock local food during the week, or plan a surplus fruit and veg swap with neighbours...
Support your local school to make h.Energy week a Walk or Cycle to School Week. Or perhaps you could plan a Walk / Cycle to Work day or week, or make it a ‘Leave the Car at Home Week'. And if you can't use public transport or walk to work, why not ask your employer if you can work from home for one day during the week. Alternatively you could lead a Cycle Ride or lead a Walk around little known cycle / pedestrian routes in your area. Many people are keen to cycle or walk to work or school but would like to avoid main roads. If you know of routes around your town or village which might empower local cyclists / walkers, why not share this with others.
Plan to share skills... perhaps you feel that you have a skill which is being lost (like making fence hurdles, pruning fruit trees, laying a hedge, making jam, storing fruit... or even mending a bike). Could you arrange to showcase this skill, and invite others to come along and share their skills too. Or why not organise a clothes swap in your area - 900,000 tonnes of shoes and clothes are thrown away in the UK every year! You could arrange a clothes swapping party in a local village hall or local pub. Or why not plan a knitting or stitching make & mend event!
Or you could put on a talk, seminar, workshop, film or arts event in your area during h.Energy week.
...Or perhaps you have a much better idea of your own! Just let us know...
If you have decided that you would like to get involved and plan an event or activity for h.Energy week, please fill in the online registration form (available here) with details about your activity or event.
All of these activities and events will then be compiled into a brochure ready for h.Energy week. The brochure will be available to the public in September, and will include event details and locations, together with a map of the county.
The brochures will also provide details of larger scale events being organised during h.Energy week... including where to see Energy Generation in Action: an opportunity to view sites around the county... how to find out more about home insulation and energy generation.
The full h.Energy diary of events will provide all of the details you need to join in with activities - large and small - which will be taking place in venues, homes, schools and businesses around the county over the course of h.Energy week.
